Charleston businesses planning for 2027 should first identify which services and customers matter most, then improve the pages, local business information, and contact paths that support those priorities. Prepare for AI search with accurate, original content and sound SEO. Use social media, email, and automation to support a clear customer journey, and measure qualified inquiries alongside traffic.

You need to know what deserves attention, what can wait, and how to tell whether the work is helping.

Since this article first appeared in February 2025, Google has published more explicit AI search guidance. Here is what that means for your next marketing decisions.

My starting point is the business itself: which work do you want more of, and does your marketing give those customers a good reason to contact you?

What has changed since the original 2025 article?

Google now provides more detailed guidance connecting AI search visibility with established SEO, original content, and technical accessibility. That is a documented development. The recommendations below translate it into business decisions for 2027; they are not predictions of future algorithm changes.

What deserves an update

What it means for your business

Google's July 2026 generative AI search guide explicitly connects AI visibility with its existing search systems.

Build on useful pages and sound SEO when improving AI search visibility.

The guide emphasizes content that contributes original value.

Add actual service details, relevant examples, and informed explanations that help someone choose.

The same guide addresses myths about special files and markup.

Ask what a proposed AI optimization task actually does before paying for it.

Google's current generative AI search guide is the source for those changes. Its recommendations concern Google Search; they do not establish how every AI platform works.

Which services should your website help you sell?

Your website should give the clearest explanations to the services that fit your business goals and capacity. Start by identifying the work you want more of, then check whether the corresponding pages help customers evaluate it.

Consider profitability, staff availability, and the inquiries you can realistically handle. A popular service can still be a poor growth priority.

Choose one priority service. Does its page explain suitability, scope, and the next step?

Prepare for AI search by publishing accurate, useful answers and making sure your important pages can be accessed and understood. For Google, established SEO remains relevant to its generative AI features.

A strong service page should answer the questions that could otherwise stop someone from contacting you:

  • Does this business provide the specific service I need?
  • Does it serve my address, or do I need to visit a location?
  • What affects the price, timing, or suitability?
  • What evidence helps me assess the business?
  • What happens after I request an appointment or estimate?

Answer those questions in readable text. Support them with genuine project photographs, relevant reviews, and clear explanations where available. Name the service and the conditions that apply so an answer still makes sense when someone reads it outside the surrounding page.

Google says it does not use llms.txt files for Search and requires no special schema markup for its generative AI features. Structured data can still support your broader search strategy when it accurately describes the page. Clear answers and valid markup cannot guarantee a citation or ranking.

What makes Charleston-area content genuinely local?

Useful local content helps customers understand where and how the business serves them. Distinguish a physical location from a wider service area, explain appointments, and show relevant completed work.

Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and Summerville are distinct municipalities. A broad “Charleston area” description can orient a reader, but customers still need accurate location and coverage details.

Business situation

Information the customer needs

A contractor serving North Charleston and Summerville

Actual coverage, services available, scheduling process, and relevant project details

A showroom in Mount Pleasant

The real address, visiting hours, appointment requirements, and what customers can see there

A business with multiple locations

Separate addresses, hours, contact details, and any differences in services

These are illustrative business situations.

A location page earns its place when it supplies useful information for that customer. Replacing one town name with another leaves the underlying questions unanswered. Start with a clear service page, then decide whether separate location pages have enough substance to help.

Google's people-first content guidance provides a useful test: does the page add original value and leave the reader with a satisfying answer? That principle supports useful local SEO work without forcing a neighborhood name into every paragraph.

Should you improve your website or redesign it?

Improve the existing website when its structure and editing tools can support the changes you need. Consider a redesign when persistent usability, content, or technical limitations make those improvements difficult to maintain.

Start with a phone and your most important service page. Can a visitor understand the offer, assess the business, and contact you without hunting through menus?

Test the phone link and form delivery. Confirm the customer sees a useful confirmation and that pop-ups or shifting elements do not obstruct the task.

Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. Use those measures to investigate performance alongside the actual customer experience.

A beautiful redesign with a confusing contact process still needs work. Before investing in website design or improvement, define the customer task the project should make easier.

How should social media, email, and automation fit together?

Give each channel a specific job: help the right person understand something useful, then make the next step easy. Automate a process only after its information and handoffs are reliable.

A short video can demonstrate a service or product. A photograph can explain a detail. An email can bring a relevant update to subscribers who asked to hear from the business. Choose the format that serves the message and that you can maintain.

Use AI to draft from approved information, then verify the facts. Automate concrete tasks such as appointment reminders and inquiry handoffs. An automated reply that invents your hours is a faster way to confuse a customer.

Which marketing numbers deserve your attention?

Track whether people discover the business, take a useful action, and become suitable customers. Those measures answer different questions and should be reviewed together.

Measure

Useful question

Relevant search queries and impressions

Is the business appearing for the work it wants?

Visits to priority pages

Are prospective customers reaching useful information?

Phone-link clicks and form submissions

Are visitors attempting contact?

Qualified inquiries and appointments

Are the inquiries suitable for the business?

Accepted estimates, orders, or recorded revenue

What business followed, where records allow a connection?

A phone-link click does not prove a completed conversation. A form submission does not establish a sale. Ask what each reported result actually represents.

For a business with limited capacity, inquiry quality deserves its own place in the report.

What should you prioritize over the next 90 days?

Choose the first task according to the obstacle between the customer and the business outcome. Fix a broken contact process immediately; improve discovery when the site works but suitable customers are not finding it.

Period

Focus

Deliverable

Days 1–30

Confirm the priority services and test the customer journey

A baseline report, working contact paths, and a short list of specific fixes

Days 31–60

Improve the pages supporting those services

Clear answers, relevant proof, and accurate coverage and business details

Days 61–90

Connect promotion with measurement

Focused content, tested links, and a review of inquiry quality and available sales records

This is a sequence for organizing work, not a ranking deadline. Adjust it to the business's capacity and immediate needs.

Start with the service you want more of and follow the path a customer would take to inquire. The gaps give you a practical place to begin.

I work directly with business owners on those decisions and the improvements that follow. Tell me what you want your marketing to accomplish, and let's discuss where to focus first.
